Trump’s X Return: Assassination Attempt, Deportation Plans, and Tech Glitches.
In a highly anticipated return to the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Donald Trump recounted an assassination attempt and outlined plans for a massive deportation effort during a conversation with X owner Elon Musk. However, the event was marred by technical glitches, highlighting the challenges of hosting large-scale discussions on the platform.
During the conversation, Trump vividly described his narrow escape from an assassination attempt, emphasizing that a mere turn of his head saved his life. “If I had not turned my head, I would not be talking to you right now — as much as I like you,” Trump told Musk, who praised Trump’s resilience and its importance for national security.
The discussion, which lasted over two hours on Monday night, touched on several key topics, including illegal immigration and Trump’s plans for a second term, should he win the presidency. However, the conversation revealed little new information and was plagued by audio issues and delays, frustrating many of Trump’s supporters who had tuned in.
The session was intended as a way for Trump to reach millions of voters directly and for X to prove its capability to handle high-profile events after previous struggles. Despite these intentions, the chat started over 40 minutes late, with more than 878,000 users initially unable to connect. Musk apologized for the delays, blaming a “massive attack” on X’s system, but the technical issues persisted throughout the conversation, leaving some of Trump’s supporters openly frustrated.
The technical difficulties echoed those of a May 2023 conversation between Musk and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, which also faced glitches during DeSantis’s presidential campaign announcement. Trump had previously mocked DeSantis for the rocky rollout, a sentiment that came back to haunt him as his own event faced similar challenges. Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign seized on the moment, issuing a statement that criticized Trump’s campaign as serving the interests of “self-obsessed rich guys who cannot run a livestream in the year 2024.”
Beyond the technical issues, the conversation underscored the evolving relationship between Trump and Musk, who have moved from being bitter rivals to unlikely allies. Musk, once a critic of Trump’s age and suitability for the presidency, formally endorsed Trump just days after the assassination attempt. During the chat, Musk even offered to join a prospective “government efficiency commission” in a future Trump administration, praising Trump’s vision for cutting government waste.
While the event marked Trump’s return to the platform that once banned him, it also highlighted Musk’s growing influence in political discourse. Since acquiring X, Musk has reinstated several banned accounts, including Trump’s, and has used the platform to amplify his views on various issues. With more than 193 million followers on X, Musk’s platform continues to play a significant role in shaping global political conversations.
The event also drew international attention, with Thierry Breton, an EU commissioner, warning Musk about the potential for amplifying harmful content during the chat. Trump’s campaign responded dismissively, urging the EU to “mind their own business instead of trying to meddle in the U.S. Presidential election.”
