D-Day Veteran's 100th Birthday: A Hero Receives Over 200 Cards and a Royal Visit.
John Dennett, a D-Day hero and proud centenarian, recently celebrated his 100th birthday with an overwhelming display of gratitude from the community. Living near Liverpool, England, John was astonished to receive over 200 birthday cards and letters from admirers across the country. The milestone was marked by a private party, filled with wartime music, food, and entertainment, a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to service.
John’s journey from a young apprentice bricklayer to a decorated World War II veteran is nothing short of extraordinary. At just 17, he defied his mother’s wishes and enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1941, managing to join despite his age. His service aboard the Queen Elizabeth during training in the US paved the way for his crucial role in the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944. John’s efforts were pivotal in the Allied victory against the Nazis, and he also participated in key landings in North Africa and Italy.
This summer, John revisited France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, an event that included a poignant meeting with the King and Queen. Reflecting on his experiences, John expressed how deeply moving the trip was, especially as he had the opportunity to deliver a heartfelt tribute in Bayeux. "For your tomorrow, we gave our today" was his tribute, a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the war.
In addition to his military service, John founded the Ashville Football Club in 1949, providing a cherished community space for local youth. Now the club’s president, John credits it with helping him navigate life’s challenges, including the loss of his wife in 1994. A giant mural of John, adorned with his medals, stands proudly on the club’s building, a testament to his enduring legacy.

As a widower for over 30 years, John has remained actively involved with the Royal British Legion, participating in commemorative events and selling red poppies to support fellow veterans. His commitment to honoring his comrades and supporting the community underscores the profound impact of his service and dedication.
